What company was created by the 2016 merger of Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller?
Answer
Anheuser-Busch InBev
Answer
Anheuser-Busch InBev
Anheuser-Busch InBev created its enlarged global brewing company through the 2016 acquisition of SABMiller.
AB InBev announced the agreement in 2015, and the transaction completed in October 2016 after extensive competition reviews. Regulators required divestitures, including the sale of SABMiller’s stake in MillerCoors in the United States and several other assets. The final deal gave AB InBev a much larger presence in emerging markets and added brands associated with SABMiller.
The transaction is often described as a merger in popular business coverage, but legally it was an acquisition by AB InBev. The buyer itself had been created in 2004 when Interbrew and AmBev combined, and it acquired Anheuser-Busch in 2008. Those earlier combinations are separate events.
The resulting group retained the Anheuser-Busch InBev name and remained associated with brands including Budweiser, Stella Artois, and Corona. Its global scale made the deal one of the largest consolidations in brewing history.
