What company resulted from the 2013 merger of Glencore and Xstrata?
Answer
Glencore Xstrata
Answer
Glencore Xstrata
Glencore Xstrata resulted from the 2013 merger of commodities trader Glencore International and mining company Xstrata.
The transaction completed on May 2, 2013, after shareholders approved the deal and regulators imposed conditions. It combined Glencore’s global marketing and trading network with Xstrata’s mines and production operations in coal, copper, zinc, nickel, and other commodities.
The combination created one of the largest diversified natural-resources companies in the world. Glencore had already been Xstrata’s major shareholder, making the transaction especially significant as a vertically integrated link between mining and commodity marketing.
The name Glencore Xstrata was short-lived. In May 2014, the company simplified its name to Glencore plc. Consequently, Glencore plc is the modern answer for the continuing business, while Glencore Xstrata precisely identifies the company immediately created by the merger.
