What company resulted from the 2002 merger of Conoco and Phillips Petroleum?

The story behind the answer

The 2002 merger of Conoco and Phillips Petroleum resulted in ConocoPhillips. The companies announced the all-stock combination in November 2001, and the merger was completed on August 30, 2002.

Conoco and Phillips were both major American oil companies with complementary operations. Conoco had a strong international presence and refining network, while Phillips was especially prominent in exploration, production, refining and chemicals. Their combination created a large integrated energy company headquartered in Houston, Texas.

ConocoPhillips later changed its structure in 2012 by separating its downstream refining and marketing operations into a new independent company, Phillips 66. This means the modern ConocoPhillips is primarily an exploration and production company rather than the fully integrated business created by the original merger.

The name can cause confusion because Phillips 66 is a successor to part of the pre-2012 business, while ConocoPhillips retained the upstream operations and the historical merger name.
