What company resulted from the 2000 merger of AOL and Time Warner?
Answer
AOL Time Warner
Answer
AOL Time Warner
AOL Time Warner resulted from the 2000 merger of America Online and Time Warner.
Announced in January 2000 and completed on January 11, 2001, the transaction combined AOL’s internet-access business with Time Warner’s film, television, publishing, and cable assets. It was presented as a landmark combination of old media and new internet technology.
The company owned or controlled major brands and assets including Warner Bros., HBO, CNN, Time magazine, and AOL. However, the dot-com crash sharply reduced AOL’s value soon after the deal closed, making the merger one of the most discussed corporate disappointments of its era.
The company dropped “AOL” from its name in 2003 and became Time Warner. It was later acquired by AT&T in 2018, and AT&T sold the media assets that became Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022. Warner Bros. Discovery is therefore not the original merger result.
