What company resulted from the 1994 merger of Northrop Corporation and Grumman Corporation?

The story behind the answer

The 1994 merger of Northrop Corporation and Grumman Corporation resulted in Northrop Grumman.

Northrop was a major aerospace manufacturer known for aircraft such as the B-2 Spirit, while Grumman had a distinguished history building military aircraft and spacecraft. Their combination created a larger defense and aerospace contractor with complementary capabilities in aircraft design, electronics and systems integration.

Northrop Grumman later expanded through major acquisitions, including Westinghouse Electric’s defense electronics business and TRW’s space and defense operations. It also became the prime contractor for the B-2 bomber and later for the B-21 Raider.

This company is often confused with Lockheed Martin, which was created by the 1995 merger of Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta. It is also distinct from Northrop’s 1994 merger partner, Grumman, whose name remains part of the combined company.
