What company is the world's largest producer of chocolate?

The story behind the answer

Barry Callebaut is the world’s largest producer of chocolate and cocoa products. Unlike familiar confectionery brands such as Hershey or Mars, Barry Callebaut mainly operates behind the scenes as a business-to-business supplier.

The Swiss-based company makes chocolate, cocoa powders, couvertures, fillings, and other ingredients used by food manufacturers, pastry chefs, chocolatiers, and restaurants. Its products may appear in finished foods sold under other companies’ brand names, so consumers often know the customer brand rather than Barry Callebaut.

Barry Callebaut was created in 1996 through the merger of Belgian chocolate maker Callebaut and French cocoa and chocolate company Cacao Barry. The group’s roots reach further back, including Callebaut’s 19th-century Belgian chocolate tradition.

“Largest chocolate producer” does not mean it sells the most chocolate bars directly to shoppers. Nestlé, Mars, and Hershey are major consumer-facing confectionery companies, while Barry Callebaut’s distinction is its global scale in manufacturing chocolate and cocoa ingredients for other businesses.
