What company did the 1998 merger of British Petroleum and Amoco create?

The story behind the answer

The 1998 merger of British Petroleum and Amoco created BP Amoco.

British Petroleum, commonly known as BP, was a major British oil company. Amoco was the shortened name of the American Oil Company, a large US petroleum business whose origins went back to the Standard Oil era. Their combination was one of the largest corporate mergers of its time.

The merged business initially used the name BP Amoco. It later adopted the shorter BP name, along with a green-and-yellow sunburst logo, as part of a broader international branding strategy.

This transaction is often confused with the later BP–Castrol and BP–ARCO deals, which were acquisitions or separate corporate developments rather than the event that created BP Amoco. The merger also predates BP’s 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, which involved the BP-operated Macondo well.
