What comedy troupe created and starred in Monty Python's Flying Circus?

The story behind the answer

The comedy troupe that created and starred in Monty Python’s Flying Circus was Monty Python.

The group consisted of Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin. They brought together experience from university comedy, television writing and programmes such as The Frost Report and Do Not Adjust Your Set. Their shared aim was to make a sketch show that did not depend on conventional setups and punchlines.

The BBC broadcast the series from 1969 to 1974. Across four series, the Pythons combined live sketches, abrupt transitions, recurring characters, musical jokes and Terry Gilliam’s surreal cut-out animations. The troupe itself is often called the Pythons, while “Monty Python” is also used as shorthand for the television series and the wider body of work.

The alternatives are related British comedy names but are not correct here. Beyond the Fringe was a different revue, The Goons were an earlier radio comedy team, and The Goodies were a later television trio. Monty Python’s success extended into films, albums, books, stage performances and the musical Spamalot.
