What colour may an official table tennis ball be under modern international rules?

The story behind the answer

An official table tennis ball may be white or orange under modern international rules. The ITTF permits these colours because they provide strong contrast against the playing environment.

The ball must have a matte finish rather than a glossy surface. This reduces distracting reflections from arena lighting and helps players track the ball during fast rallies. White remains especially common in televised and club matches, while orange balls are also widely used for practice and competition.

Colour is not the only requirement. A regulation ball is spherical, measures 40 millimetres in diameter, and weighs 2.7 grams. Since 2014, approved balls have generally been made from plastic rather than celluloid.

Bright novelty colours are common in toys and informal games, but they do not automatically meet competition specifications. The permitted colour is therefore part of a broader equipment standard, not merely a matter of personal preference.
