What color is the star on the flag of Suriname?

The story behind the answer

The star on the flag of Suriname is yellow. It is a large, five-pointed star placed at the center of the red band, making it the flag’s most prominent symbol.

Suriname adopted its current flag on November 25, 1975, the day the country became independent from the Netherlands. The design emerged from a national competition won by Jack Pinas, an art teacher and graphic designer. Its green bands represent fertility and the richness of the land, while white is associated with freedom and justice, and red with progress and hope.

The star is commonly interpreted as representing national unity and a bright future. It is not a group of stars representing separate provinces or ethnic communities. That can cause confusion because Suriname’s earlier pre-independence flag, used from 1959 to 1975, displayed five differently colored stars intended to represent major population groups. The modern flag replaced that design with one unified yellow star.
