Red and yellow became the classic color combination associated with McDonald’s Golden Arches branding.
The bright yellow arches were designed to attract attention from passing motorists, especially when placed against red backgrounds on roadside signs and restaurant façades. The pairing also became prominent in packaging, uniforms, advertising, and other branded materials during McDonald’s expansion.
Yellow helped preserve the connection to the physical arches, while red supplied a strong contrasting field that made signs easy to recognize at a distance. The combination became so closely linked with McDonald’s that people could often identify the chain from the colors alone, even when the restaurant name was not shown.
McDonald’s has used other palettes in some markets and modern restaurant designs. Green, for example, became more visible in later environmental and restaurant imagery. Those changes did not erase the classic red-and-yellow identity, which remains one of the most durable elements of the company’s visual branding.
