The Starbucks coffee drink introduced in 2015 with ristretto shots and microfoam is the Flat White. Starbucks added it to participating U.S. and Canadian stores on January 6, 2015, presenting it as a core espresso beverage.
The Starbucks version uses two ristretto shots, which are shorter, more concentrated espresso extractions. Because less water passes through the coffee, ristretto shots are often described as sweeter, denser, and more intensely flavored than standard espresso. Baristas combine them with steamed whole milk and a thin layer of creamy microfoam, then commonly finish the drink with a small dot of latte art.
The Flat White is often confused with a latte or cappuccino because all three combine espresso and milk. Its identity comes from the balance: stronger coffee presence than a typical latte and much less thick foam than a cappuccino. Starbucks did not invent the drink; the Flat White is associated with Australian and New Zealand café culture, and Starbucks had already offered versions in some other markets before its 2015 North American launch.
