What city was Titanic trying to reach on its maiden voyage?

Titanic was trying to reach New York City on her maiden voyage. The White Star Line operated the voyage as a transatlantic service from Southampton, England, to New York, with intermediate stops at Cherbourg, France, and Queenstown, Ireland.

Titanic left Southampton on April 10, 1912, carrying passengers from several countries, including wealthy travelers in first class and many emigrants in third class seeking new lives in North America. After the French and Irish port calls, the ship entered the North Atlantic on the final leg toward New York.

The destination is sometimes confused with Halifax because Halifax later became an important center for recovering Titanic victims and identifying the dead. Boston and Philadelphia were also major American ports, but neither was Titanic's scheduled destination. After the sinking, RMS Carpathia carried the survivors to New York, arriving there on April 18, 1912.
