What city is famous for pecan pralines?

The story behind the answer

New Orleans is famous for pecan pralines. The city’s version is a soft, creamy candy made with pecans, sugar, butter, and usually milk or cream.

Pralines originated in France as confections of nuts coated with caramelized sugar. French settlers brought the idea to Louisiana, where local cooks adapted it to the ingredients available in the region. Almonds were replaced or supplemented by abundant native pecans, and cream helped produce the softer American style.

New Orleans pralines became part of the city’s Creole confectionery tradition and are often sold in the French Quarter and other tourist areas. In Louisiana, they may also be called “pecan candy.” The mixture is cooked until thick, then spooned onto wax paper or another greased surface to cool into irregular rounds.

The word praline does not mean the same thing everywhere. In much of Europe, praline may refer to a nut paste, ground caramelized nuts, or a filled chocolate. American pralines are generally recognized as the creamy nut candies associated with the American South, especially New Orleans.
