The series follows Dexter Morgan, a bloodstain-pattern analyst working for the fictional Miami Metro Police Department. Miami is more than a backdrop: its beaches, tropical climate, waterways, nightlife, Latin American influences, and hurricane threats shape the show's atmosphere and plot.

The original series premiered on Showtime in 2006 and ran for eight seasons. Although the story takes place in Miami, much of the production was filmed in Los Angeles and Long Beach, California. That filming choice sometimes causes confusion, especially because California locations stand in for Miami neighborhoods and police facilities.

Dexter's boat, the Slice of Life, connects the character to Miami's coastal setting, while the Gulf Stream becomes part of his method for disposing of evidence. The later sequel series Dexter: New Blood changes locations entirely, moving Dexter to the fictional upstate New York town of Iron Lake.
