What Christian group did C.S. Lewis help form with J.R.R. Tolkien at Oxford?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis belonged to the Oxford literary group known as the Inklings.

The Inklings was an informal discussion and writing circle associated with Oxford University. Its members met mainly during the 1930s and 1940s, often at The Eagle and Child pub, where Lewis and other writers read drafts and discussed literature, mythology, and Christianity.

J.R.R. Tolkien was one of Lewis’s closest fellow members. Charles Williams and Owen Barfield were also significant participants. The group was not a formal society with a constitution or membership card; it was a friendly network whose composition changed over time.

The Inklings name can be misleading because the group was not exclusively Christian or exclusively devoted to fantasy. Its meetings covered poetry, theology, philology, and unfinished manuscripts. Tolkien’s readings from The Lord of the Rings and Lewis’s readings from his own work helped make the circle especially famous.
