Ronald McDonald became McDonald’s primary mascot after first appearing in a 1963 television commercial.
The character was created to give McDonald’s a recognizable personality aimed especially at children and families. Early versions of Ronald used elements associated with the restaurant, including a tray-like hat, a cup-shaped costume detail, and a bright clown appearance. The character was initially portrayed by television personality Willard Scott.
Ronald’s rise marked a major change in McDonald’s branding. The earlier Speedee character had represented fast service, while Ronald supported a more imaginative, family-oriented identity. Later campaigns expanded that identity through the fictional McDonaldland setting and characters such as Grimace and the Hamburglar.
A frequent misunderstanding is that Ronald was McDonald’s first mascot. Speedee appeared in earlier branding, but Ronald became the enduring public face of the company’s children’s marketing. His design and use varied across countries and decades.
