The Moon appeared behind the Liberty Bell on the 1976 United States Bicentennial dollar.
Dennis R. Williams designed the dollar’s reverse, which superimposed the Liberty Bell against the Moon. The composition combined a famous symbol of American independence with a dramatic celestial image, creating one of the most distinctive circulating commemorative coin designs in United States history.
The Bicentennial dollar, like the special quarter and half dollar, displayed the dual date 1776–1976. The designs were selected in 1974, and the Mint later made technical adjustments before striking the coins for circulation.
The celestial background can be confused with the imagery on other commemorative coins, especially because the Liberty Bell itself appears in many American symbols and artworks. The Bicentennial dollar’s design is specifically the Liberty Bell against the Moon, while the quarter used a colonial drummer and the half dollar depicted Independence Hall.
