What causes a soul in the Land of the Dead to disappear forever?

The story behind the answer

A soul in the Land of the Dead disappears forever when the living forget that person.

Coco presents remembrance as a force that sustains the dead. Family members remain connected to the living through photographs, stories, and the offerings placed on an ofrenda during Día de los Muertos. If nobody in the living world remembers a deceased person, that soul undergoes a final disappearance often called the “Final Death.”

Héctor explains this danger to Miguel while trying to reach his daughter Coco. His own fear is especially urgent because Coco is elderly and losing her memories. When Miguel sings “Remember Me” to her, Coco recalls her father and later preserves his memory by sharing stories and keeping the missing piece of his photograph.

A photograph is important for crossing the bridge between worlds, but not having one is not what causes permanent disappearance. Likewise, stealing a marigold or breaking a rule can create problems in the plot, yet neither causes the soul’s final erasure.
