A Catholic Mass may accompany a quinceañera as a thanksgiving for the celebrant’s life.
In Catholic families, the religious portion is often called a quinceañera Mass or thanksgiving Mass. It can include prayers, Scripture readings, a blessing, and participation by the celebrant’s family and sponsors. The service may take place before the reception, although arrangements vary by parish and location.
A quinceañera Mass is not the same as a sacrament. The celebration is a cultural and religious observance, but it does not confer a new sacrament in the way Baptism, Confirmation, or Matrimony does. A parish may also set requirements for preparation or participation.
Not every quinceañera includes Mass. Secular celebrations, other Christian services, and family ceremonies are also possible. The important distinction is that Mass identifies the Catholic worship service sometimes connected with the birthday, not the party itself.
