The Spanish name for a quinceañera’s male sponsor or ceremonial godfather is padrino.
A padrino may be a relative, family friend, or other trusted adult who helps support the celebration. Depending on the family and region, sponsors may contribute financially, provide ceremonial items, or participate in a church service. The role is not identical in every quinceañera.
Padrino should not be confused with chambelán. A chambelán is generally a male member of the honoree’s court, often a peer who participates in formal dances. A padrino is usually an adult sponsor or godparent figure, making the two roles different even when one person performs more than one function.
