What building was London Underground’s headquarters from 1929 until 2020?

The story behind the answer

55 Broadway was London Underground’s headquarters from 1929 until 2020.

The landmark office building stands above St James’s Park station in Westminster. Designed by Charles Holden for the Underground Electric Railways Company of London, it opened in 1929 and was created as both an office headquarters and a major station building.

Its architecture combines a stepped Art Deco form with a cross-shaped plan, allowing the building to rise above the railway station while preserving light and space around it. Sculptures by Jacob Epstein, Eric Gill and Henry Moore were commissioned for the building’s exterior.

London Underground staff began leaving 55 Broadway in the early twenty-first century, and the headquarters function ended in 2020. The building is often associated with London’s transport architecture, but it is not the same as Transport for London’s later headquarters at Windsor House.
