What building, formerly the Pennsylvania State House, is the historic venue linked to the Declaration’s adoption?

The story behind the answer

Independence Hall is the historic Philadelphia building formerly known as the Pennsylvania State House.

The Second Continental Congress met there when it adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The building also hosted the Constitutional Convention in 1787, making it central to both the declaration of independence and the creation of the United States Constitution.

The name “Independence Hall” became widely used after the American Revolution. The building was originally designed for Pennsylvania’s colonial government and was completed in the eighteenth century. Its Assembly Room is the space most closely associated with the Continental Congress and the founding era.

Independence Hall is part of Independence National Historical Park. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, alongside its importance as a landmark for the America250 commemoration.
