What building appeared on the reverse of the 1976 United States Bicentennial half dollar?

The story behind the answer

Independence Hall appeared on the reverse of the 1976 United States Bicentennial half dollar.

The Philadelphia building was chosen because the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence there in 1776, and the Constitutional Convention met there in 1787. Its image linked the Bicentennial to both the independence movement and the creation of the federal Constitution.

The coin retained John F. Kennedy's portrait on the obverse. Like the Bicentennial quarter and dollar, it used the dual date 1776–1976. The designs were issued for circulation and also produced in special collector versions, including silver-clad examples.

Independence Hall was known as the Pennsylvania State House during the Revolutionary period. The building's modern name reflects its later historical importance. It should not be confused with the Liberty Bell, which was commissioned for the same building but appeared on the Bicentennial dollar rather than the half dollar.
