What bird returned to Noah with an olive leaf after the flood waters receded?

The story behind the answer

A dove returned to Noah with an olive leaf after the flood waters receded.

Genesis 8 describes Noah sending birds from the ark to test whether the waters had fallen. He first sends a raven. Later, he sends a dove, which initially returns because it finds nowhere to land. When Noah sends it again, the dove comes back in the evening with a freshly plucked olive leaf.

A third release of the dove produces a different result: it does not return. Noah therefore understands that the surface of the earth has become accessible again. The olive leaf became a widely recognized symbol of peace, renewal, and hope.

The raven and dove are sometimes mixed up in summaries of the story. The raven is the first bird mentioned, but the bird carrying the olive leaf is specifically the dove.
