A dove brought Noah an olive leaf after leaving Noah’s Ark. In Genesis 8, Noah first sent out a raven, then sent a dove to determine whether the floodwaters had receded.
The dove initially returned because it found no place to land. Noah sent it out again seven days later, and it came back with a freshly plucked olive leaf. After another seven days, Noah sent the dove out once more, and it did not return.
The olive leaf became a widely recognized symbol of peace, hope, and the end of conflict. The biblical passage itself uses it as practical evidence that vegetation had reappeared and that the waters were going down.
The raven and dove are both part of the episode, which explains why they are sometimes confused. The raven was sent first, but the dove is the bird specifically associated with the olive leaf. This account is found in Genesis 8:6–12.
