What battery chemistry does BYD call its Blade Battery?

The story behind the answer

BYD’s Blade Battery uses lithium iron phosphate, abbreviated LFP, as its lithium-ion cathode chemistry. BYD introduced the battery in 2020 and emphasized its long, thin cell design and improved packaging efficiency.

LFP batteries are valued for strong thermal stability, durability, and lower reliance on nickel and cobalt than several other lithium-ion chemistries. Their trade-offs can include lower energy density than some nickel-rich cells, although vehicle design and cell-to-pack integration affect the final result.

“Blade” describes the cell format and packaging concept, not a separate electrochemical family. The battery is associated with BYD, but LFP chemistry is also used by other manufacturers. Another frequent confusion is calling the battery simply a solid-state battery: the Blade Battery is a conventional lithium-ion battery, not a commercially deployed solid-state pack.
