The band whose original members had all previously belonged to The Wilde Flowers was Caravan.
Caravan formed in Canterbury, England, in 1968. Its founding lineup consisted of Pye Hastings, Richard Sinclair, Dave Sinclair and Richard Coughlan. Each had been a member of The Wilde Flowers, although they were not all in that earlier group at the same time. This connection makes Caravan one of the defining bands of the Canterbury scene.
The Wilde Flowers operated in Canterbury during the 1960s and never released a full album during its original active period. Its members later helped create several important progressive-rock groups, especially Caravan and Soft Machine. The band’s changing lineup included musicians such as Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers and the Hopper brothers, alongside the future Caravan founders.
Caravan blended psychedelic rock, jazz, classical influences and progressive rock. Its best-known early album, In the Land of Grey and Pink, was released in 1971. The band has undergone many lineup changes and several breakups and reunions, but its origin remains closely tied to The Wilde Flowers. A common mistake is to say every Wilde Flowers member joined Caravan; many instead became associated with Soft Machine or other Canterbury groups.
