What band's co-founder died in a motorcycle accident in 1971?

The story behind the answer

The Allman Brothers Band had co-founder Duane Allman, who died in a motorcycle accident in 1971. Allman was riding his Harley-Davidson Sportster in Macon, Georgia, on October 29, 1971, when he swerved to avoid a flatbed truck carrying a lumber crane. He was 24 years old.

Duane and his brother Gregg Allman formed the band in 1969 with Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, and Jai Johanny “Jaimoe” Johanson. Duane’s slide-guitar playing and the group’s extended improvisations helped define Southern rock and jam-band music.

A common mix-up is Berry Oakley, the band’s bassist, who also died in a motorcycle crash—on November 11, 1972, less than 13 months after Duane’s death. The band continued after Duane’s death and completed the album Eat a Peach, which included recordings made before the crash.
