What band did Gavin Rossdale form after Bush split up in 2001?

After Bush split up in 2001, Gavin Rossdale formed the band Institute.

Institute emerged in 2004, during the hiatus that followed Bush’s early-2000s breakup. Rossdale formed the group with guitarist Chris Traynor, who had previously played with Bush, and recruited bassist Cache Tolman and drummer Josh Freese. Charlie Walker later became the band’s regular drummer, while Freese was involved during the recording period.

Institute released its only studio album, Distort Yourself, on September 13, 2005. The record continued Rossdale’s alternative- and hard-rock direction, but it was presented as a new project rather than a continuation of Bush under another name. Its first single, “Bulletproof Skin,” reached the mainstream and modern rock charts.

The band also performed several Bush songs live, which sometimes causes confusion about whether Institute was simply a renamed version of Bush. Institute was a separate group, although Rossdale’s voice, songwriting role, and Traynor’s connection to Bush made the musical link obvious. Institute remained active from 2004 to 2006 and later opened several dates for U2’s Vertigo Tour.
