What band came mostly from The Yardbirds?

Led Zeppelin came mostly from The Yardbirds. When The Yardbirds broke up in 1968, guitarist Jimmy Page assembled a new lineup with Robert Plant, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones.

The new group initially performed under the name The New Yardbirds because Page still had Scandinavian concert commitments booked under The Yardbirds name. After completing that tour, the musicians adopted the name Led Zeppelin. Page was the only direct member carried over from The Yardbirds, but the new band also continued performing some Yardbirds material, including “Train Kept A-Rollin’” and “Dazed and Confused.”

A common mix-up is saying Led Zeppelin was simply The Yardbirds renamed. The lineup was substantially different: vocalist Keith Relf and drummer Jim McCarty departed, while Plant, Bonham, and Jones joined Page. The Yardbirds’ influence nevertheless remained central, especially through Page’s blues-based guitar approach and the group’s heavy live sound.
