What award did Pixar’s Cars become the first film to win in the award’s animated-feature category?

The story behind the answer

Pixar’s Cars became the first film to win the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature.

The award was presented at the 63rd Golden Globe Awards in January 2007, covering films released in 2006. Cars won over the other nominees in the newly established film category, making it the inaugural recipient.

The achievement is sometimes confused with the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, which had already existed since 2001. Cars was nominated for that Oscar but did not win; the Academy Award went to Happy Feet.

Cars’ Golden Globe victory reflected the growing recognition of animated films within major film-award organizations. The category has since been won by films from Pixar, Disney, DreamWorks, Sony, and other animation studios.
