What ATU type is 'Jorinde and Joringel' classified as?
Answer
ATU 405
Answer
ATU 405
“Jorinde and Joringel” is classified as ATU 405. The number identifies a distinct international folktale type centered on a girl transformed into a bird and a young man who seeks a magical remedy.
In the Grimms’ story, Jorinde and Joringel are lovers who wander too close to a witch’s castle. The witch changes Jorinde into a nightingale and freezes Joringel in place. Afterward, Joringel dreams of a flower capable of breaking the enchantment.
He searches for nine days, finds the flower, and returns to the castle. Its power protects him from the witch’s spell and opens the way for him to rescue Jorinde and the other enchanted maidens.
The tale is also known as “Jorinda and Jorindel” in some English translations. It is KHM 69 in the Grimms’ collection, a separate numbering system from ATU classification. ATU 405 is therefore not the tale’s Grimm collection number.
