What art movement is Georgia O'Keeffe most strongly associated with in the United States?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe is most strongly associated with American modernism.

American modernism included artists who challenged traditional academic representation through abstraction, simplified forms, unusual viewpoints, and new approaches to color and composition. O'Keeffe became one of its most recognizable figures, especially through her close-up flower paintings, abstract drawings, skyscraper scenes, and New Mexico landscapes.

Her art does not fit a single narrow formula. Some works are clearly abstract, while others depict recognizable flowers, bones, buildings, or mountains. What links them is her transformation of familiar subjects through scale, cropping, repetition, and design.

O'Keeffe is sometimes labeled simply a flower painter, but that description leaves out much of her career. She also painted New York architecture, Lake George subjects, desert bones, and broad Southwestern landscapes. Her association with American modernism is therefore broader and more accurate than identifying her with one subject or one technique.
