Answer
American modernism
Georgia O’Keeffe is commonly associated with American modernism.
American modernism describes the broad movement in which artists developed new approaches to form, color, abstraction, and subject matter during the early twentieth century. O’Keeffe became one of its most recognizable American figures through enlarged flowers, abstract compositions, and paintings of urban and Southwestern subjects.
Her early charcoal drawings, shown by Alfred Stieglitz in 1916, were especially important because they used simplified lines and shapes rather than traditional realistic representation. Stieglitz promoted her as a major modernist, although O’Keeffe resisted overly narrow interpretations of her work.
She is sometimes labeled an abstract expressionist because some paintings are nonrepresentational, but that movement is generally associated with a later generation of artists such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. O’Keeffe’s career began earlier and developed across several modernist styles.
