Khutbah is the Arabic term for the sermon delivered before the Friday congregational prayer.
During Jumu‘ah, the imam or another qualified speaker delivers the khutbah before the prayer. It commonly includes praise of God, prayers for Muhammad, Quranic recitation, moral instruction, and reminders relevant to the congregation. The sermon is normally delivered in two sections with a brief sitting between them.
Khutbah is a general Arabic word for a sermon, so it is not limited to Friday. Sermons are also delivered during the two Eid festivals and on other significant occasions. It should not be confused with the adhan, the call announcing prayer time, or the iqamah, the shorter call immediately before a congregational prayer begins.
