What animal is Rita Skeeter’s secret Animagus form in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series?

The story behind the answer

Rita Skeeter’s secret Animagus form in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series is a beetle.

Rita is a journalist known for sensational stories, intrusive reporting, and her Quick-Quotes Quill. Her illegal Animagus ability lets her transform into a small beetle and secretly observe conversations. She uses this advantage to gather material that can be turned into dramatic or damaging articles.

Hermione Granger works out Rita’s secret after noticing details about her reporting and later traps her in beetle form inside a jar. Hermione then threatens to expose Rita’s unregistered Animagus status unless the journalist stops publishing harmful stories about her and her friends.

Rita’s transformation is easy to confuse with an ordinary insect disguise, but it is a regulated magical ability. Animagi retain their minds while transformed, and witches or wizards are expected to register with the Ministry of Magic. Rita’s refusal to register is part of the reason her secret is so dangerous.
