What animal is Owl?

Owl is an owl in A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh stories.

Owl serves as the Hundred Acre Wood’s self-appointed mentor and adviser. He presents himself as highly knowledgeable and often gives lengthy speeches, but his confidence is undercut by comic mistakes, especially his poor spelling. The character’s supposed wisdom and occasional incompetence create one of the series’ recurring jokes.

Owl first appears in Winnie-the-Pooh (1926), when Pooh visits him while searching for Eeyore’s missing tail. Unlike Piglet, Pooh and several other characters, Owl was not based on one of Christopher Robin Milne’s stuffed animals. E. H. Shepard’s illustrations depict him more like a living bird. In the books, he lives in a tree and uses his talons as hands.

A common mix-up comes from the broad “wise old owl” stereotype: the character is an owl, but Milne humorously questions whether he is as wise or literate as he claims. Disney adaptations make him more jovial and alter some visual details, including how he uses his wings and talons. Those changes do not alter his canonical species.
