What was the original name of Christopher Robin's stuffed bear?

The original name of Christopher Robin’s stuffed bear was Edward Bear.

Christopher Robin Milne received the teddy bear in 1921, and he initially called it Edward. In A. A. Milne’s early writing, the toy and its storybook counterpart appear as Edward Bear before the character becomes known as Winnie-the-Pooh.

Christopher Robin later renamed the bear Winnie after Winnie, a Canadian black bear he saw at London Zoo. That real bear had been named for Winnipeg, the hometown of her owner, Canadian Lieutenant Harry Colebourn. The “Pooh” portion came from a swan that Christopher Robin encountered and named Pooh.

This origin is easy to muddle because “Winnie,” “Pooh” and “Winnie-the-Pooh” are the names used at different stages. The character first appeared as Edward in the 1924 poem “Teddy Bear,” published in Punch and later included in When We Were Very Young. The familiar hyphenated name appeared in 1925, before the first Pooh story collection followed in 1926.
