What animal head did the crocodile god Sobek have?
Answer
Crocodile
Answer
Crocodile
Sobek, the crocodile god, had a crocodile head.
Sobek was an ancient Egyptian deity usually represented either as a crocodile or as a human figure with the head of a crocodile. His appearance reflected the Nile crocodile, an animal that inspired both fear and reverence along Egypt’s waterways.
Sobek’s powers were broader than his animal form suggests. He was associated with the Nile, fertility, pharaonic authority, military prowess, protection, and physical might. Egyptians could invoke him to defend people from the dangers of crocodiles and other threats. In some traditions, his fierceness was precisely what made him an effective protective god.
His most important worship centers included the Faiyum, Crocodilopolis, and Kom Ombo. Sacred crocodiles were sometimes raised, honored, and mummified at temples. Sobek was also combined with the sun god Ra as Sobek-Ra, giving him solar attributes. He should not be confused with Anubis, whose animal-headed form was associated with a jackal and funerary rites.
