What animal does Santa ride in the Netherlands?

In the Netherlands, Santa’s traditional counterpart Sinterklaas rides a horse.

Sinterklaas is based on Saint Nicholas, the fourth-century Christian bishop associated with generosity and children. His traditional arrival is celebrated before Christmas, with the main gift-giving occasion taking place on December 5, Saint Nicholas Eve, rather than on December 25.

The horse is an important part of Dutch Sinterklaas imagery. In modern televised celebrations, the animal has had well-known names: Amerigo was the familiar horse for many years, and Ozosnel replaced him after 2019. Sinterklaas is commonly depicted entering towns on horseback, sometimes arriving by steamboat before continuing through the streets.

The wording can cause a cultural mix-up: Dutch Sinterklaas is not exactly the same figure as the American Santa Claus, whose best-known transport is a team of flying reindeer. However, trivia questions often use “Santa” as a shorthand for the Dutch gift-bringer. For the Netherlands, the expected animal is therefore a horse.
