What alternate title was considered before Parks and Recreation was chosen?
Answer
Public Service
Answer
Public Service
“Public Service” was considered as an alternate title before the series was named Parks and Recreation. The proposed title fit the show’s focus on municipal workers and the everyday responsibilities of local government.
NBC ultimately rejected the name because network officials worried that a comedy called Public Service could be interpreted as mocking public-sector work or the idea of government service itself. The production then settled on Parks and Recreation, a title that more directly identified Leslie Knope’s department and the show’s civic setting.
The series began development in the late 2000s as a possible spin-off of The Office, but Greg Daniels and Michael Schur ultimately shaped it into a separate show. It premiered on NBC in April 2009, following the work of Pawnee’s Parks and Recreation Department.
