What airline group was created by the 2011 merger of British Airways and Iberia?
Answer
International Airlines Group
Answer
International Airlines Group
The 2011 merger of British Airways and Iberia created International Airlines Group.
International Airlines Group, commonly abbreviated IAG, was established as a holding company for the two airlines. British Airways brought a major London-based international network, while Iberia contributed extensive routes and expertise connected with Spain, Latin America and other markets.
The airlines continued operating under their own brands after the merger. This structure allowed IAG to combine corporate ownership and strategic planning without immediately replacing the identities familiar to passengers. IAG later expanded by acquiring or developing additional airline brands, including Vueling, Aer Lingus and LEVEL.
This transaction is often confused with the Air France-KLM merger, which created a different airline group in 2004. IAG is also not itself an airline brand printed on most aircraft; it is the parent group that owns several airlines.
