United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement
Answer
United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement
The United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement replaced NAFTA as the North American trade agreement in 2020.
The United States, Mexico and Canada signed the USMCA on 30 November 2018. It entered into force on 1 July 2020, replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement, which had operated since 1 January 1994.
The agreement preserved much of NAFTA’s tariff-free treatment while updating rules for areas such as automobiles, digital trade, labor and environmental commitments. It also included a six-year review mechanism intended to encourage periodic reassessment by the three governments.
The agreement has different official names in the three countries. It is called USMCA in the United States, CUSMA in Canada and T-MEC in Mexico. These names refer to the same agreement, so a question asking for its formal English name points to the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement.
