Bilbo Baggins is 111 years old at the beginning of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Bilbo celebrates his 111th birthday during the grand party described in the opening chapter, “A Long-expected Party.” He shares the celebration with his much younger relative Frodo, whose birthday is also on 22 September. Bilbo’s remarkable longevity is one of the first clues that the One Ring has affected him.
At the party, Bilbo uses the Ring to vanish from sight before leaving the Shire. He then gives the Ring to Frodo, although he initially struggles to surrender it. Gandalf later investigates the Ring and confirms its dangerous identity.
Bilbo was born in the year 2890 of the Third Age, while Frodo was born in 2968. Because Hobbits commonly live longer than Men, Bilbo’s age is extraordinary but not impossible within Tolkien’s world. The birthday party is also the opening setting of The Fellowship of the Ring.
