What actor played Dr. Leslie Arzt in Lost?

Daniel Roebuck played Dr. Leslie Arzt in Lost. Arzt is a junior-high science teacher among the fuselage survivors of Oceanic Flight 815, and Roebuck appeared in the role during the series’ first, third, and sixth seasons.

Arzt is introduced as a knowledgeable but irritable member of the beach camp. He studies the island’s wildlife, keeps specimens in jars, and repeatedly warns the survivors about its dangers. His scientific knowledge makes him useful when Jack, Kate, Locke, and Hurley travel to the Black Rock to obtain dynamite.

His death is one of Lost’s most memorable examples of grim irony. While explaining how unstable dynamite can be, Arzt mishandles a stick and is killed when it explodes in his hand. The survivors are left carrying pieces of him in plastic bags, turning a tense expedition into an unexpectedly macabre scene.

Viewers sometimes confuse Roebuck with Michael Emerson, who played Ben Linus, or Mark Pellegrino, who played Jacob. The character’s surname is also pronounced like the German word for “physician.”
