Georgia O'Keeffe's Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 sold for $44.4 million at auction in 2014.
The painting, completed in 1932, shows a large white jimson weed flower against a blue background. It was sold by Sotheby's in New York in November 2014 and reached a price of $44.4 million, including the buyer's premium. The buyer was Walmart heiress Alice Walton, who added it to the collection associated with Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
The sale established a record for the highest auction price paid for a work by a female artist at that time. It also exceeded the previous record for an O'Keeffe painting by a wide margin. The title is sometimes shortened to Jimson Weed, but the full title is Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1.
The figure includes the buyer's premium, which is why auction reports may distinguish it from the hammer price. Later sales by other women artists changed the broader market record.
