What 2004 comedy features a strange Idaho teenager and 'Vote for Pedro'?

The story behind the answer

What 2004 comedy features a strange Idaho teenager and “Vote for Pedro”? Napoleon Dynamite is the answer. Jared Hess's offbeat comedy stars Jon Heder as Napoleon, an awkward high-school student living in Preston, Idaho, whose friendships and family troubles unfold with deliberately deadpan humor.

The “Vote for Pedro” campaign belongs to Pedro Sánchez, a transfer student from Juárez, Mexico, who runs for class president against the popular Summer Wheatley. Napoleon supports Pedro, and the campaign culminates in Napoleon's improvised dance performance to Jamiroquai's “Canned Heat,” which helps turn the election in Pedro's favor.

The film grew from Hess's nine-minute 2002 student short Peluca, made while he and Heder were at Brigham Young University. Hess filmed the feature in and around Preston on a budget of about $400,000, using many local locations. Although its small-town setting and retro technology can make it feel older, the story is set during the 2004–05 school year. The movie later developed a major cult following.
