The 2003 film directed by Tommy Wiseau that is considered one of the worst movies ever made and has a cult following is The Room.
Wiseau wrote, directed, produced, and starred in the film, which centers on a melodramatic love triangle involving banker Johnny, his fiancée Lisa, and his best friend Mark. Set in San Francisco, it was made on an unusually large reported budget for an independent production and received overwhelmingly negative reviews upon release.
Its reputation gradually transformed into a kind of midnight-movie celebration. Audiences quote dialogue, throw plastic spoons, toss footballs, and attend screenings dressed as characters. The film’s production history was later dramatized in The Disaster Artist, based on Greg Sestero’s memoir about making the movie.
The Room is sometimes confused with Troll 2 or Manos: The Hands of Fate, which also have reputations as famously bad cult films. Those are separate movies; The Room is specifically the Wiseau production released in 2003.
