What 2002 musical set in Jazz Age Illinois won Best Picture?
Answer
Chicago
Answer
Chicago
The 2002 musical set in Jazz Age Illinois that won Best Picture is Chicago.
Directed by Rob Marshall, Chicago follows Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, two accused murderers in 1920s Chicago who compete for publicity while awaiting trial. Renée Zellweger plays Roxie, Catherine Zeta-Jones plays Velma, and Richard Gere portrays their smooth-talking lawyer Billy Flynn.
The film adapts the 1975 Broadway musical, which was based on Maurine Dallas Watkins’s 1926 play. Watkins drew on real Chicago murder trials, and the stage musical’s vaudeville style became a distinctive part of the movie. Musical numbers often appear as performances inside Roxie’s imagination rather than ordinary events in the courtroom or jail.
Chicago won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, at the 75th ceremony in 2003. It was the first musical to win Best Picture since Oliver! in 1968. Dreamgirls and Moulin Rouge! are musical films, but neither won that prize.
